General Description

The Dean of the College of Medicine (COM) reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) and serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College. The Dean provides strategic leadership for all academic, research, clinical, and administrative functions of the College, while fostering excellence in medical education, research, clinical partnerships, and community engagement.

Beyond this, the Dean advances the College’s vision and strategic objectives, ensures compliance with national and international accreditation standards, and promotes academic quality, faculty success, and student success. In addition, the Dean strengthens collaboration with healthcare partners and external stakeholders, and oversees the effective management of the College’s financial, human, and physical resources, in alignment with the University’s strategic priorities. Overall, the Dean contributes to the University’s broader planning and development by leading strategic planning, academic program development, faculty and staff recruitment, resource management, program assessment, accreditation, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic and Academic Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership for the College by developing and implementing its vision, mission, goals, and long-term strategic plans, consistent with the University’s strategic direction
  • Provide collaborative and collegial leadership that fosters excellence in medical education, research, innovation, clinical practice, and community engagement
  • Represent the College internally and externally, building strategic partnerships that enhance the reputation and visibility of both the College and the University

Curriculum and Program Quality

  • Lead the planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of undergraduate, graduate, and professional medical education programs
  • Develop, implement, promote, evaluate, and continuously enhance the College’s curriculum in accordance with national and international medical education standards
  • Oversee the management, review, assessment, and continuous improvement of the curriculum, so it stays relevant, high-quality, and aligned with institutional and accreditation requirements
  • Ensure the quality, effectiveness, and accreditation readiness of all academic programs within the College

Students and Faculty

  • Foster excellence in teaching, learning, research, innovation, and clinical education
  • Provide leadership in student recruitment, enrollment, retention, academic progression, graduation, and overall student success
  • Coordinate with academic departments and College leadership to support student academic programs and enhance the overall educational experience
  • Recruit, develop, mentor, supervise, and retain highly qualified faculty and administrative staff, while promoting academic excellence, scholarship, integrity, and professional development
  • Evaluate faculty performance and promote continuous professional development, thereby strengthening academic leadership, teaching excellence, research productivity, and instructional innovation
  • Promote an inclusive academic environment that supports diversity, equity, professionalism, collaboration, and ethical conduct

Research and External Partnerships

  • Strengthen collaboration with affiliated hospitals, healthcare institutions, professional organizations, and regulatory bodies, to support clinical education, research, and community service
  • Promote externally funded research, interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and scholarly activities within the College
  • Promote fundraising initiatives, philanthropic partnerships, and external resource development, to support the College’s strategic priorities

Governance, Compliance, and Operations

  • Develop, implement, administer, and monitor the College’s strategic, operational, and budget plans, while ensuring effective stewardship of financial, physical, and human resources
  • Monitor College performance through key performance indicators (KPIs), institutional effectiveness measures, accreditation requirements, and strategic objectives
  • Oversee program assessment activities and ensure continuous compliance with institutional effectiveness requirements and national and international accreditation standards
  • Ensure compliance with University policies, governmental regulations, accreditation standards, and applicable healthcare education requirements
  • Collaborate closely with the VPAA, Hospital leadership, Deans, Directors, faculty, and administrative units, to advance institutional objectives
  • Serve on University committees and represent the College in executive meetings as assigned
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the VPAA

Qualifications & Experience (Required)

Education and Credentials

  • Earned Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent medical degree from an accredited institution
  • Board certification or equivalent recognized clinical specialty qualification
  • Earned doctorate or equivalent academic qualification required for appointment at the rank of Professor
  • Fluency in spoken and written English

Academic and Clinical Leadership

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive academic leadership experience in higher education, including significant leadership responsibilities within a medical school
  • Demonstrated experience in medical education, curriculum development, faculty affairs, research administration, and academic governance
  • Experience working within clinical teaching environments and healthcare organizations
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in university teaching, research, academic leadership, and scholarly achievement

Operational and Administrative Experience

  • Experience with accreditation, quality assurance, institutional effectiveness, and strategic planning within higher education
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and evaluating faculty members, academic administrators, and support staff within a higher education institution
  • Experience in strategic planning, academic program review, budgeting, fiscal management, resource allocation, organizational development, and continuous quality improvement
  • Outstanding interpersonal, leadership, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to effectively advocate for the College and build collaborative partnerships
