Job Description

The School of Arts and Sciences at the American University in Dubai (AUD) invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Oral Rhetoric (Public Speaking), with teaching expected to begin in Fall 2026.

This is a faculty position based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

About the Position

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate teaching in oral rhetoric and public speaking, while maintaining an active research agenda and supporting curriculum development and academic service.

AUD is seeking candidates with strong expertise in communication, speech, rhetoric, and public speaking who can effectively teach students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD from a Western-accredited institution at the time of appointment in one of the following areas:

Communication

Including areas such as:

• General communication.
• International communication.
• Interpersonal communication.
• Communication studies.
• Speech communication, which is preferred.

Or Speech

Including:

• Speech studies.
• Rhetoric.

Required Experience and Skills

Candidates should demonstrate:

• Experience teaching Public Speaking.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
• Experience teaching diverse student populations.

Related experience in the following areas is also relevant:

• Forensics.
• Performing arts.
• Media.
• Professional memberships or certifications related to the discipline.

Candidates should provide evidence of teaching excellence or demonstrate significant potential and promise for effective undergraduate teaching.

Academic Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Deliver effective undergraduate teaching in Public Speaking and related areas.
• Maintain an active programme of research and scholarship.
• Contribute to curriculum development.
• Participate in departmental and School service.
• Engage in service to the wider university and community.
• Support a diverse and internationally oriented student population.
