About the Assistant Professor of Urban Design Role

The School of Architecture, Art, and Design at the American University in Dubai invites qualified applicants for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Urban Design, to begin teaching in Fall 2026.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate should have:

• A completed Ph.D. in Urban Design, Urban Planning, or Architecture from a Western-accredited institution at the time of appointment
• Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching urban topics at the university level
• Digital literacy in commonly used software for Urban Design, with demonstrated application of at least two of the following (certified instructors are preferred):
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning for urban data analysis and design
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Parametric and Generative Design
• An active research agenda in Urbanism, focused on topics such as emerging technologies, environmental sustainability, urban infrastructure, or social inclusion, evidenced by publications, presentations, or funded projects
• The ability to teach both design studio and lecture courses within a broad urban design curriculum
• The ability to work within a diverse student and faculty community

Favorable Qualifications

• Evidence of previous collaborations with government agencies or private industry in the field of Urban Design
• Knowledge and experience teaching Architecture courses, with digital literacy in the most common architecture software, such as Revit and Rhino
• Experience supervising thesis research and projects at the postgraduate level

Expectations

Candidates will have evidence of successful teaching experience, or must demonstrate significant potential and promise of teaching effectiveness and excellence at the graduate level. Additionally, candidates are expected to meet standards for personal professional scholarship, and assist with student advising, curriculum development, and other service to the program, department, school, and community.

Compensation

The compensation package for this position is competitive and based on the expatriate model. Besides a tax-exempt basic salary, it includes a housing allowance, annual two-way airfare, health/life insurance, professional memberships, conference attendance expenses, and other components.
