The University Library at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites applications for the position of Cataloging and Metadata Librarian.

The position provides specialist expertise in cataloging, metadata management, technical services, institutional repositories, archives, copyright services, and academic library support.

About the Position

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Technology and Technical Services, the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will support the management of both print and online library resources.

The role includes responsibility for:

  • Cataloging and metadata.
  • Technical processing.
  • Database maintenance.
  • Coordination of assigned technical services staff and workflows.
  • Institutional repository management.
  • Archives coordination.
  • Copyright and rights-management services.
  • Collection development.
  • Library instruction and outreach.
  • Academic departmental liaison.
  • Collaboration with external vendors, including OCLC.

The position also shares responsibilities relating to acquisitions, serials, and document delivery.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Catalog print and electronic resources using recognized standards, including AACR2, LCSH, LC Classification, MARC21, and relevant metadata standards.
  • Provide face-to-face and virtual reference assistance.
  • Manage the deposit of scholarly and institutional outputs into the AUS institutional repository.
  • Coordinate the Archives Specialist and relevant archives functions.
  • Coordinate copyright services, including rights management and course-pack processes.
  • Undertake departmental liaison responsibilities.
  • Support collection development and maintenance.
  • Deliver library instruction and related professional activities.
  • Maintain strong links with regional and international library and information-sector partners.
  • Share and promote professional best practice.
  • Participate in continuing professional development.

Required Qualifications and Professional Experience

Applicants must hold an ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS), or an equivalent qualification.

Candidates must also demonstrate:

  • At least two years of relevant experience in an academic library.
  • Direct experience cataloging both print and electronic resources.
  • Significant practical experience engaging proactively with faculty members and researchers.
  • Experience supervising paraprofessional staff within an academic library.

  • Experience in international academic librarianship, preferably within an institution following an American curriculum.

  • Knowledge of current issues, trends, and best practices in technical services and library technology.
  • Understanding of cataloging processes and procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience using indexing and abstracting databases and related software.
  • Experience with Library Services Platforms and Discovery Layers, including systems such as OCLC WorldShare.
