Job Description

The Department of Civil Engineering & Architecture at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) invites applications for Associate Professor or Assistant Professor positions specializing in Geotechnical Engineering. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, and service in geotechnics and geomechanics.

General Duties:

  • Teach academic courses within specialization in accordance with quality standards
  • Supervise graduation projects and postgraduate theses (Master’s and PhD)
  • Provide academic advising and support students
  • Attend departmental and college council meetings
  • Participate in internal and external committees
  • Prepare and publish scholarly research
  • Offer scientific consultations and participate in conferences
  • Contribute to community service through workshops and seminars
  • Build local and international partnerships

Specific Duties:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in geotechnical engineering
  • Develop and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses (English medium)
  • Supervise, advise, and mentor students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Publish research findings in reputable refereed journals and conferences
  • Engage in collaborative interdisciplinary research projects
  • Secure external funding and consultancies
  • Actively participate in departmental and university committees

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
  • MSc and PhD in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Minimum 3 years university teaching and research experience

Research Expertise:

  • Experimental (laboratory or field), theoretical, computational, or data-driven approaches
  • Resilient infrastructure, geological engineering, rock mechanics, geomechanics for sustainable energy applications

Teaching Areas:

  • Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering
  • Site Investigation, Slope Stability, Ground Improvement Techniques
  • Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, Geoenvironmental Engineering
  • Finite Element and Numerical Modelling of Geomaterials
  • Constitutive Modelling of Soils
  • Probabilistic and Reliability-Based Geotechnical Engineering
  • Soil–Structure Interaction

Required Skills:

  • Record of research productivity with publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Proficiency in relevant testing and analysis methods
  • Strong communication skills and commitment to student mentoring
  • High level of analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Planning and organizational skills
  • Team working skills with high level of cooperation
  • Professional licensing in area of expertise (advantageous)

General Requirements:

  • Good conduct required
  • Qualifications must be obtained through full-time study (distance, blended learning not accepted)
  • Medical fitness required
