About Candidate
Dr. Khaled Abdelghafar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering at Cairo University, Egypt. His research focuses on shallow geothermal energy systems, rock mechanics, and numerical modeling for sustainable geo-energy applications, particularly in hot and arid climates. His work integrates geotechnical engineering principles with energy system design to develop innovative solutions for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in the built environment.
Dr. Abdelghafar received his Ph.D. in Mining and Geological Engineering from Cairo University, where his doctoral research investigated the efficiency and sustainability of shallow geothermal energy systems in hot climates, using Cairo as a case study. His research combined field investigations, laboratory testing, and advanced thermo-hydro-mechanical numerical modeling to evaluate the performance of borehole heat exchanger systems under arid environmental conditions.
During his doctoral studies, he was awarded an Erasmus+ mobility fellowship as a visiting researcher at the University of Bologna, Italy, where he conducted advanced research on geothermal system performance and subsurface thermal processes. He has also participated in several international training programs and technical visits in Germany, Spain, Croatia, and Italy related to geothermal systems, subsurface engineering, and advanced testing methods.
Dr. Abdelghafar has published research in high-impact international journals, including Q1-ranked publications in the field of geothermal energy. His research interests include shallow geothermal energy systems, thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of rocks and soils, borehole heat exchanger design, sustainable cooling technologies, and numerical modeling of geo-energy systems.
In addition to his academic work, he is actively involved in international research collaboration. He is a member of the coordination team of an Erasmus+ funded project and a staff member of the UNESCO Chair on Science and Technology for Cultural Heritage at Cairo University. He also serves as a reviewer for several international scientific journals.
